Maintained (Implied) Status – What It is, and What Changed Recently

Maintained (previously known as implied) status is perhaps one of the most misunderstood concepts of Canada’s immigration system.  Many mistakenly question its legality.  Others fail to appreciate its unique requirements, and abruptly find themselves without status.   Recent procedural changes and court decisions in Canada have only added to the confusion. Is Propagandist Media Still Protected in War? – EJIL: Talk!

In the most recent episode of Israeli attacks on Iran, on Monday, 16 June 2025, Israeli forces struck the headquarters of the Iranian state broadcaster in Tehran. In a post on X, the Israeli Defence Minister immediately claimed responsibility, stating

‘The propaganda and incitement broadcasting authority of the Iranian regime was attacked by the IDF […]. We will defeat the Iranian dictator everywhere.’

This statement implies that the broadcasting studio was considered a legitimate target. While this might align with Clausewitz’s view that the enemy’s morale is a legitimate military target, it raises the question of whether such an interpretation is valid under modern international law. In short, it is not – at least not unless the studio is deemed to pose an imminent military threat or is intended for military use, or is directly inciting serious crimes under international law.

Negligent Entrustment Explained: A Tort Remedy for the Unprotected Worker

Written By: Jamie Davison, Associate and Emily Roti, Summer Student   Not every workplace injury falls nicely within the bounds of statutory compensation schemes like Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA). Pardons, Criminal Theory, and Political Sociology

Few instruments of executive power are as sweeping, as opaque, and as ripe for abuse as the presidential pardon. Under Donald Trump, this power shed its last vestiges of impartiality and morphed into a vehicle of transactional politics. Pardons have become rewards for loyalty, tools of self-interest, and instruments of partisan retribution. Rather than signaling…
