1. An Omni-Crisis in International Law: Iran, Israel and Gaza. The Transitional Justice Institute at Ulster University is hosting an online discussion on the current omni-crisis in international law – with Prof. Marko Milanovic from Reading University, Susan Power from Al Haq, Palestinian lawyer Sahar Francis, and Dr. Thomas Hansen and Dr. Roua Al Taweel from Ulster University – 8 July, 6.30pm to 8pm (UK time). Twenty-four UN experts have condemned Israel’s attacks on Iran on 13 June as ‘a flagrant violation of fundamental principles of international law, a blatant act of aggression and a violation of jus cogens norms.’ A range of lawyers increasingly use the language of genocide to describe Israeli policy in Gaza. But the Israel-Iran conflict has taken the focus off Palestine. Join the discussion by signing up via Eventbrite here.

2. The 2025 Edmund Siemers Lecture: Prof. Dr. Seline Trevisanut. The International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (IFLOS) has announced that the 2025 Edmund Siemers Lecture will take place at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) as part of the 2025 IFLOS Summer Academy. Thanks to the support of the Edmund Siemers Foundation, Prof. Dr. Seline Trevisanut will give the Lecture, titled “Protection and Exploitation of the Ocean: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.” The Lecture will take place on 23 July 2025 at 17:00 (Hamburg time) and will be available to attend in person or online. Further details, including registration information, can be found here.

3. Combatant Subjectivity and the Law of War Talk. On 10 July 2025 at 16:00, Ka Lok Yip (Hamad Bin Khalifa University) will give a talk entitled ‘“Arm Bearer” or “Warrior”? An Existential Encounter between Combatant Subjectivity and the Law of War’ at Helmut-Schmidt-University, Hamburg, Germany. The talk unpacks the divergence between two ICRC-commissioned reports on IHL compliance through an existential phenomenological lens: one views combatants as functionaries while the other views combatants as reflective individuals. The talk is part of the Law in Context Lecture Series at Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg, organised by Prof. Dr. Sigrid Boysen, Dr. Sué González Hauck and Dr. Jens T. Theilen. In-person attendance only. Prior registration required (lawincontext {at} hsu-hh(.)de).

4. Expressions of Interest: Statelessness and Citizenship Review. The Statelessness and Citizenship Review (SCR) is now inviting Expressions of Interest for a Special Issue on ‘Citizenship, Statelessness and Emerging Technologies’. This Special Issue will be produced in collaboration with Laura Bingham, Professor of Practice and Clinical Director of the Tech Justice Clinic at Temple Law School.  Send EOIs to info {at} screview(.)net by 15 October 2025. The full Call for EOIs with a detailed timeline is available here, including an optional work-in-progress colloquium in early 2026.

5. Call for Papers: Statelessness and Citizenship Review. SCR has announced a Call for Papers for the Volume 8 Issue 1. Submissions are open until 1 October 2025. As an interdisciplinary journal, they invite submissions on any theme relating to statelessness and citizenship. In addition to journal articles, SCR also publishes Critique and Comment, Case Notes and Book Reviews. They particularly encourage scholars and practitioners whose work is situated at the intersection of statelessness/citizenship studies and another field to consider responding to this call. SCR is a joint initiative of the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion and the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness at University of Melbourne.  Visit the SCR website for guidelines and contact info {at} screview(.)net.

6. Genocide in Gaza Lecture. On 14 July 2025, from 6-7 pm CET, Kai Ambos will hold the next lecture of the TwoLaw – Lecture Series on the Laws of War via MS Teams. The topic is: “Genocide in Gaza, especially the special intent requirement?”. The lecture discusses the genocide crime in abstract terms but also with regard to the situation in Gaza. It looks at the distinction between state/collective (state responsibility) and individual criminality (individual criminal responsibility). It will then focus on the special intent to destroy distinguishing between three levels: the abstract meaning of this intent, the standard of proof and the concrete procedural proof of this intent. Register here. The MS Teams link will be sent to those registered ahead of the event. Questions should be sent to Alexandra Konecny (research assistant to Prof. Andreas Kulick) akonecny {at} uni-mainz(.)de.

7. Call for Papers: JGLR Vol. 11 N0. 1 (September 2025). The student-run law review in Southeast Asia, Juris Gentium Law Review (JGLR), is now accepting submissions from law students of all levels of study for its upcoming Volume 11 No. 1 (September 2025).
